Alien Skin The Electronic Melancholic
From: Beatwire.com
George Pappas, aka Alien Skin, has a very personal vision: To make electronic music with a heart and soul. With the release of his debut album, Dont Open Till Doomsday, Alien Skin has done just that. As the keyboardist from legendary 80s Australian band Real Life, whose Send Me An Angel is still a regular on radio playlists all over the world, Pappas has some serious musical credentials. As Alien Skin, he takes his vast experience, and a fair helping of musical talent to boot, to craft something that sounds fresh and different while still nodding to the sounds that inspired him.
Sonically, and even lyrically, the most obvious comparison is to the more innovative recordings of Depeche Mode. But Alien Skin updates the sometimes raw sound of those pioneers of electronica. There are elements of the stripped down Detroit techno of the likes of Carl Craig and Deepdish. There is a hint of the vocal sound of Underworld. Bundled together, all of these influences help create a soundscape that both enraptures and challenges the listener from first bar to last. Bubblegum pop this is not. It is real, yet accessible music, made by a musician who knows that electronic music does not mean music without a soul. Pappas describes his work as a kaleidoscope of electronic melancholia - music for astronauts, aliens, and all marginal beings living at the frontiers. In many ways, this is the best description anyone could give this strange, beautiful record. Like a kaleidoscope, it seems to be in a constant state of flux, with the sound shifting almost imperceptibly as it works its way into the mind.
And, like a kaleidoscope, Dont Open Till Doomsday is best appreciated on an individual level; maybe because it will hold different meaning for each of us. Created entirely by Alien Skin, who wrote, sang, played, produced and engineered every note, it invites the listener into a very personal aural experience. This record will reach into the hearts and minds of anyone who likes their music to take them on a voyage of discovery. It is based on infectious melodies and poignant lyrics which will stick with any discerning listener long after the record has stopped spinning. It is rare to find a true original, but in Alien Skins contemplative dubby electronica, we may just have done that. Listen and be converted.

The Return of Tin Pan Alley: Publishing Never Looked So Sexy
A serious recording industry decline is having a major impact on surrounding music industry businesses. And the downward spiral is motivating moves into areas traditionally associated with the major labels. Perhaps the most prominent example comes from Live Nation, which is now cherry-picking top-tier talent like Madonna and Jay-Z away from major label pastures. And companies tied into online and mobile music consumption are also taking a significant piece of the action, part of a quickly-transforming business.
Another sector undergoing rapid change is the publishing industry, a business frequently characterized as a stodgy enterprise. But instead of collecting checks from dusty song catalogs, the publishing group of 2008 is a surprisingly proactive and increasingly diversified entity. Its executives are now assuming roles traditionally associated with the recording label, including artist discovery and development. Tin Pan Alley is back, its just not called Tin Pan Alley anymore, said Kenny McPherson, president and senior executive at Chrysalis Music, North America, during a publishing forum at MusEXPO on Wednesday. That can shift the path towards success for certain artists. Nick Robinson, senior executive of Writer/Publisher Relations in Europe at BMI, noted that artist discussions often start with the publishing group. James Blunt couldnt get a record deal until EMI Music Publishing took the initiative, Robinson said. The publishing giant claims a role in pairing Blunt with writers like Mark Batson, Jimmy Hogarth, Steve McEwan, and Max Martin, even though the artist mostly writes for himself. But the level of involvement is often deeper than that. Publishers have to make up for what labels are no longer able to do, said Kathleen Carey, senior vice president of International at Sony/ATV Music Publishing. Publishers started getting involved in development many, many years ago, the beginning of a much broader commitment. In fact, Carey is now putting certain artists on the road, and shepherding awareness and growth aspects normally handled by the label.
Elsewhere, others are branching out into some wildly creative areas. Justin Shukat, founding partner and general manager of Primary Wave Music Publishing, is actively involved in the development of a new cartoon series to promote the catalog of Hall & Oates. We are creating a new platform for the copyrights we own, Shukat said. That sounds tremendously innovative, though publishers frequently catch a negative image for demanding excessive royalties from developing platforms. And digital startups are often stymied by stubborn publishers, many of whom are disinterested in rolling the dice. One has to respect that the artists and authors want a share, said Jens-Markus Wegener, managing director at AMV Talpa GMBH. I dont want to be in a position in which big brand companies making billions of dollars are saying, cmon, its promotion, Wegener continued.
MacPherson was equally committed to generating revenues from his catalogs, and disagreed with promotional uses. What we are looking for is an equitable situation, the executive said. But not all songwriters are touring artists, and I dont see why songwriters should have to work for free. That sounds reasonable enough, though the bargaining table often includes more than just gratis requests. And show-stopping disagreements frequently characterize discussions related to on-demand streams, downloads, and other digital assets. That is further complicated by the major label group structure, which includes publishing houses as major revenue contributors. Wegener pointed to a negotiation process that resembles a complex family, and few would characterize the typical licensing discussion as a simple affair.
Meanwhile, publishers are facing downside from lost mechanical royalties associated with the sale of pre-recorded CDs. That has some analysts nervous, though the highly-ambitious publishing sector is aiming to diversify away from the problem. Story by Paul Resnikoff in Los Angeles. Court Questions Making Available Theory, Trial Ahead
The RIAA hit an unexpected speed bump last week, thanks to a successful challenge of the making available theory. In the case of Atlantic v. Howell, a district court judge denied a motion for summary judgment by the RIAA. The husband-and-wife Howells, defending themselves with the help of the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), successfully argued that the RIAA could not prove that an illegal distribution had actually taken place. The RIAA used MediaSentry to pull unauthorized files from a Howell-controlled Kazaa account, a practice that normally qualifies as an infringing act. But the Howells argued that an actual upload was not properly observed, and the MediaSentry instance was merely a fabricated, hired example. The judge agreed, generating a big victory according to the EFF. In its order, the court delivers the most decisive rejection yet of the recording industrys making available theory of infringement (i.e., if someone could have downloaded it from you, youve violated copyright, even if no one ever did), the EFF explained. A trial is likely by September. Story by news analyst Alexandra Osorio.

eMusic Takes DRM-Free Independence Into Canada
eMusic officially launched itself in Canada, a move that brings the action to independent music fans up north. According to an eMusic representative, a small number of Canadians already access the US-based service, though the launch raises the regional profile considerably. The company carries a catalog of roughly 3.5 million tracks from 33,000 independent labels and audiobook publishers, a number that includes a subset of several thousand songs from Canadian artists. The Canadian launch is focusing on that regional content, a decision that will undoubtedly play well with local audiences. Additionally, the entrance could boost paid downloads in the region, which are far lower - by total revenue percentage and absolute quantity - than United States levels. eMusic has sold more than 200 million music downloads since November 2003. Universities Report Climb In RIAA Letters...
The RIAA is tossing more anti-piracy notices at colleges nationwide, at least according to several reports from university administrators. The Chronicle of Higher Education found increased volumes at schools across the United States, a sudden jump. We have not seen a nationwide spike like this, said Kevin L. McLaughlin, director of information security at the University of Cincinnati. That was echoed by a similar report in Ars Technica. Normally, we only get about a dozen per year; now we are getting about four to six notices a week, St. Cloud State IT security coordinator Darrin Printy told Ars on Thursday. All of that means more paperwork and resource demands for schools. Because most colleges investigate every incident and take action against the online pirates, the surge is putting a sudden strain on their resources as the semester winds down, the Chronicle explained. Ars Technica counted a total of 5,404 settlement letter recipients, of which 2,300 opted to quickly settle in a pre-court process.

Week In Review
Digital formats now account for 23 percent of total, US-based recorded revenues, according to data released this week by the RIAA. The group also pointed to mostly-flat growth in subscription-based platforms last year.
Coldplay offered the first single from its forthcoming album for free, a move that stimulated heavy awareness.
Major labels Universal Music Group, EMI Group Plc, and Warner Music Group sued Project Playlist, alleging massive infringement. Project Playlist allows users to create playlists online, sourcing content hosted all across the internet.
A district court judge assigned rates payable to ASCAP for streaming performance uses by Yahoo, AOL, and RealNetworks. The groups could be required to pay up to $100 million for uses between 2002 and 2009. Permalink Web-site: http://www.digitalmusicnews.com/stories/050108week 05/08/08

Recap: Reason 4.0 Seminar with Francis Preve
Propellerhead Francis Preve hosted a great seminar on Reason 4.0. The first half of the seminar covered the instruments in the Reason rack. This included the older synths Malström and Subtractor, Redrum, Dr. Rex, the NN-10 sampler, the new RPG-8 monophonic arpeggiator, the effects and the Combinator feature. The second half the seminar covered the new multi-synthesis synthesizer, Thor. Thor is a powerful and complex new synth from Reason. Francis provided insight and ideas on how to use this powerful tool in the studio to create new sounds. Reason has become a powerful tool for both musicians and producers to add to the overall production of any music.
Whos In the Studio
Scott Harris, a TRCoA graduate, has been in the studio working with Lance McNeill and Serafia. Produced by Lance, the laid back rhythmic sounds provide a foundation for the soulful vocal styling of Serafia. Summer Days takes you to a lazy summer day, drifting through the day with your lover.
Jeff Henson, a TRCoA graduate, has been in the studio with Secular End. The driving force behind the pop punk sound of Secular End is Secular Dan on guitar and vox. Joining Secular Dan is Saint Theresa on bass and vox, Anthony Romo on drum and part timer Mr. Nate on guitar. Jeff has been busy working in post production on the debut cd for Meganaut, the band Jeff founded and fronts. In addition, Jeff recently was the recording engineer for VASTs latest release, April.
Zach Hillyard, an Advanced Music Production student, is in the studio working with Kaiur Bännor. The sounds of old school epic European power metal is coming out of Waco, Texas. Influenced by Children of Bodom, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Cradle of Filth, Stratovarius, Dimmu Borgir, Magnus Thorsen, X Japan, and King Crimson to name a few, Kaiur Bännor is Cavin Schilling - guitar, Kalle Tilhouen - lead guitar, Matthew Wiseman - bass, and Derek Morris - drums.

Fans Help Fund Future Release for Norine Braun
From: Beatwire.com
Vancouver Evolution of the Blood Star by Norine Braun makes it to number 1 on Outvoice in March and has charted now for eleven consecutive months. Riding on this outpouring of love and support, the indie iconoclast has decided to venture forth and give fans, friends, investors and supporters an opportunity to be part of the next recording. In her exciting new project, Acoustically Inclined, Norine Braun is looking outside the box to support her forthcoming 7th album in exchange for some wonderful gifts and opportunities. Starting at a $10 pre-release download link all the way up to a $5000 Executive Producer level fans become part of the magic and the dream by funding the album. Fan funded artists are on the rise as independent music requires a breaking away from traditional methods and discovering new and creative ways of generating financing for projects.
Her most recent album Evolution of the Blood Star is a joyful amalgamation of downtempo, jazz, pop and rock. Pop, as a genre, and music altogether would be incomplete without the magical artistry of this distinct singer songwriter. Alex Jasperse from Muses Muse says ...This album is simply a masterpiece: it has detached elements from jazz, pop, trip-hop and soul without ever losing a sense of cool. Everything is rich and varied, daring but soothing and beautifully poetic. The album also features Norine Brauns award winning single and now new music video, Crystallize. The video showcases First Nation west coast art styled animation and is currently in rotation on Muchmoremusic tv Canadas national music video channel.
Norine Braun is a Vancouver based singer-songwriter who has been called jazzed up, funk tinged alternative pop. That should tell you how her music defies conventional categorization. Built on a solid foundation of soul, Norine experiments with forms from ambient pop to jazz and rock. Braun herself is an interesting mixture of equal parts Sade, Blondie, Bjork and Patti Smith. Smooth one minute and rocking out the next. Its a rare quality, and one that Braun capitalizes on to keep things compelling, a genuine musical chameleon.

Todd Snider.....Fri., May 16th Get Tickets
Critically acclaimed singer/songwriter and funnyman, Todd Snider is back on the Gruene Hall stage on May 16th, most likely in his bare feet. Formerly based out of San Marcos, Texas, Todd is now 9 CDs out from Songs From the Daily Planet, his first release in 1994, and all of them are good. Hes earned accolades from from John Prine, Jerry Jeff Walker, and Kris Kristofferson for his songwriting talent, as well as his ability to win over his audiences. Every musician knows that it takes guts to get out in front of hundreds of people, all alone in your bare feet, and there is no one better at it than Todd Snider. Keith Richards says that humor is rock-n-rolls greatest weapon and Todd has taken that to heart. Get tickets now to see his one man show. His special guests, The Tejas Brothers, play a fun mix of Tex-Mex, blues and rock-n-roll.

The Marshall Tucker Band.....Fri., May 30th Get Tickets
From the little town of Spartanburg, South Carolina, The Marshall Tucker Bands career has spanned over three decades. Their discography includes a large number of recordings, including box sets, live recordings, and greatest hits compilations. Theyve played countless concert venues around the world, and although the band configuration has changed and evolved, their powerful stage presence hasnt changed. As a part of the Southern rock movement happening in the 70s, they were probably best know for their hits, Heard it in a Love Song, and Cant You See. Other well known Marshall Tucker Band songs include Fire on the Mountain, Take the Highway, and Desert Skies. The current members of the band are Doug Gray (lead vocals), Pat Elwood (bass guitar), Chris Hicks (guitar), Clay Cook (vocals, guitar, keyboards, flute), B.B. Borden (drums), and David Muse, formerly with Firefall, (flute, sax). Coincidentally, Paul Riddle, the original drummer for the Marshall Tucker Band but no longer touring, produced one of our favorite young bands that also hail from Spartanburg, The Deschamps Band. Clay McClinton, son to Delbert, opens the show.
Gruene Hall honors Chris Gaffney and Wash Hamilton, who have both recently passed away. Chris Gaff Gaffney was the founding member of the quickly rising alt-country band, The Hacienda Brothers. He was an extraordinary musician and a kind, loving man. Dave Gonzales and the rest of the Hacienda Brothersplan to release the CD that they recorded earlier in the year with Gaff at the helm.......Youve seen Wash Hamilton playing bass and holding down the rhythm section for Ponty Bone and the Squeezetones for the past 15 years. He was a long-time member of the Gruene Hall musical family and will be greatly missed.

How To Write Hit Melodies, Part 2
by Molly-Ann Leikin
In writing a melody, its critical to keep your audience surprised. Since we speak English in iambic pentameter, its natural to assume we can write in the same meter. Unfortunately, its deadly boring. So I suggest you deliberately vary the lengths of your lines, and the number of notes in each, along with the number of lines or bars per section, to avoid your song sounding predictable. After all, its your job as an artist to tell your audience something they arent expecting.
The range of most contemporary singers is an octave and three - the interval from middle C, for example, to the E an octave above it. If you write a tune with a range greater than that, youll be hard-pressed to find a singer with the chops to handle it. My song, An American Hymn, which I wrote with Lee Holdridge, was only recorded once in twenty years until Lee figured out how to revise the bridge melody, reducing our octave and five to an octave and three. Now the song is recorded at least once a month.
Most hit power ballads, such as Daughtrys Home, end their verses on notes lower than the ones on which the choruses start. To create tension and drama in their melodies, I urge my clients, and you, to go up into the chorus, not sideways or down. Doing the latter is like letting air out of a tire. So go up and stay up. And although some contemporary songs break the rising-into-the chorus rule, you can bet their rhythmic hooks at the beginning of and throughout the choruses are strong enough to overcome the melodys drop, and keep us listening.
Molly-Ann Leikin (rhymes with bacon) is a song marketing consultant in California, who, for a modest professional fee, works one-on-one to help you find the right writing partner and then helps you market your finished work to all the right people. A Eurovision finalist (American Idol in Europe), Molly is the author of How to Write A Hit Song, Fifth edition, (June, 2008) from which this article is excerpted, and How to Be a Hit Songwriter, both published by Hal Leonard. She has a house full of gold and platinum records plus an Emmy nomination, has written themes and songs for over four dozen TV shows and movies, including Eight is Enough and Violet that won an Oscar. KEDA 1540AM Jalapeno Radio
March 17, 2009 43th Anniversary
The experts said when we started on March 17th, 1966 this cantina music playing radio station wouldnt last 3 months
Richard Davila 09/08/05
KEDA 1540AM, Radio Jalapeno, as been listening to the community since 1966. On March 18, 2008, Radio Jalapeno will celebrate its 42th Anniversary. As a community oriented radio station, KEDA is an anomaly in the world of broadcasting, where growth is determined by the size of the merger. A local station in every sense of the word, KEDA listens to the listeners. No computer generated play list here. A singular feature of KEDA is the Jalapeno Jukebox which takes requests from 12:00noon till 1:00pm. More than once, listeners have requested a song in an attempted to stump the DJ, only to be surprised by the expanse of the record bin. Manual Gonzales Davila believed in the words that are on every FCC license where it says in service to the community. His efforts, continued by his son Ricardo have made KEDA Jalapeno Radio a parte de tu familia, part of the family for generations of San Antonio families. Bilingual Conjunto and more where the listener is always heard.
